The United Nations Security Council is meeting in a closed session to address concerns regarding Iran’s substantial increase in its uranium stockpile, which is nearing weapons-grade purity. This vital session was prompted by a coalition of six council members—France, Greece, Panama, South Korea, Britain, and the United States—who aim to discuss Iran’s obligations to communicate effectively with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) about unresolved nuclear material issues detected at various locations in the country.
Recent warnings from the IAEA indicate that Iran has been enriching uranium to 60% purity levels, a significant concern as it is only a step away from the 90% purity considered suitable for military applications. Iran has repeatedly stated that its nuclear program is purely for peaceful purposes. However, the sharp rise in enrichment levels has raised suspicions among Western nations, who argue that such high enrichment levels lack justification for civilian energy needs and that no nation has enriched uranium at such rates without progressing towards developing nuclear weapons.
This meeting takes place against the backdrop of the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), under which Iran had agreed to limit its nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief. The U.S. withdrawal from the agreement in 2018, initiated by then-President Donald Trump, dramatically shifted the landscape, leading Iran to gradually abandon its nuclear restrictions.
Britain, France, and Germany have indicated their willingness to reinstate all international sanctions should Iran persist on this current path towards potentially achieving nuclear weapon capabilities, although this “snapback” option will only be accessible until October 18 of the following year, when a pertinent U.N. resolution is set to expire.
