The Office of the Divisional Commissioner North has announced that measures are being implemented to prepare for anticipated wet weather conditions over the next 48 hours. Divisional Commissioner Uraia Rainima convened with leaders from key services, including the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), police, fire services, the Ministry of Education, the Fiji Red Cross, and the Fiji Meteorological Services, to finalize actionable plans and ensure resources are allocated to assist affected communities.
The FRA has confirmed that access roads across the island remain clear, despite experiencing heavy rainfall overnight. The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued forecasts that are helping stakeholders enhance their preparedness efforts.
The Ministry of Education has been instructed to prepare schools to serve as evacuation centers, should the need arise. Residents in low-lying areas are urged to take precautionary measures and relocate to higher ground during daylight hours to minimize risks.
Authorities recommend avoiding unnecessary travel at night to ensure safety and reduce potential hazards for first responders. If anyone is uncertain about evacuation centers or requires assistance, they are advised to contact local authorities or police without delay.
Commissioner Rainima has also encouraged farmers to relocate livestock to safer areas and take steps to protect their livelihoods.
“We urge everyone to prioritize their safety during this time. Listen carefully to weather advisories and updates on the radio, and take early action to prepare, especially those in low-lying areas. Avoid unnecessary movement at night, and remember, your safety is our top priority. Stay calm, and do not hesitate to reach out for assistance if needed,” he stated.
The Commissioner’s Office will continue to closely monitor the situation and offer timely updates. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and to cooperate fully with emergency services.
Overall, the proactive planning and cooperation among various essential services reflect a strong commitment to community safety and resilience. Residents are urged to take these warnings seriously and prepare adequately, showcasing community solidarity in facing adverse weather conditions.
