Nineteen individuals were taken to Lautoka Hospital after a serious collision between a bus and a twin cab vehicle at Vitogo, just outside Lautoka, yesterday afternoon.

According to police reports, the incident occurred at around 2:45 PM when the twin cab emerged from Vitogo Road and collided with a bus traveling from Lautoka towards Ba. The bus was en route to Ellington Wharf in Rakiraki, preparing to board the Goundar Shipping vessel scheduled to depart at 6 PM for Natovi and Vanua Levu.

Sherin Nisha, a passenger on the bus, shared her feelings of sadness regarding the situation, labeling it as a regrettable mistake on the part of the twin cab driver. “He should have waited for a few seconds for the bus to pass,” Ms. Nisha noted, reflecting on how abruptly the driver pulled out from the junction without seeming to see the oncoming bus.

The collision was significant enough that the impact caused the bus to flip over onto the driver’s side of the twin cab. Both the driver of the twin cab and the 18 passengers aboard the bus required medical attention and were transported to Lautoka Hospital.

Despite the distressing nature of this incident, the quick response of emergency services and the medical staff at Lautoka Hospital is commendable. Their prompt actions ensured that those injured received the necessary care as quickly as possible.

This unfortunate event serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety and vigilance, particularly at junctions where visibility can be compromised. It is hoped that all involved recover swiftly and that such accidents can be prevented in the future.
