Nine Independent MPs Deliver Surprise Support to Fiji’s PM

Nine independent Members of Parliament have expressed their support for Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka without making demands for Cabinet positions. The MPs, led by Mosese Bulitavu, met with Rabuka and declared their intention to back the government as crossbenchers.

Bulitavu explained that the independent MPs approached him to discuss their support for the government, leading to their decision to form a third bloc in Parliament. Despite their support for Rabuka, they will remain independent and not join another political party until further constitutional clarification.

Rabuka assured that if the nine MPs were excluded from the Opposition Caucus meetings, separate facilities would be arranged. Independent MP Aliki Bia mentioned that they are willing to assist the government if opportunities arise.

Rabuka emphasized that the support from the nine independent MPs does not threaten the coalition’s stability and stated that they will actively participate in parliamentary debates. He also highlighted that no demands or agreements were made between him and the independent MPs, allowing for the possibility of reviewing the 2013 Constitution.

Both SODELPA leader Aseri Radrodro and NFP leader Biman Prasad welcomed the support from the independent MPs, reiterating that the coalition remains strong and united.
