Nightclubs: Scapegoat or Safe Haven for Youth?

John Jeong Choon-Sik, the president of White House Nightclub in Martintar, Nadi, recently addressed concerns about the influence of nightclubs on young people during a community meeting with the Nadi Police. He asserted that nightclubs should be seen as venues primarily for mature adults, rather than places suited for children.

Choon-Sik emphasized that the real negative influences on youth often come from their immediate family members rather than nightlife establishments. He pointed out that adults frequently model behaviors like drinking, smoking, and using inappropriate language, which children are likely to mimic. “The responsibility lies with parents and relatives,” he stated, urging for a shift in focus towards the roles these adults play in shaping young people’s behavior.

He highlighted the importance of collaboration between families, churches, and educational institutions in providing proper guidance for the youth. Citing alarming statistics from Saint Giles Hospital, which reported over 7,000 young people under their care this year, Choon-Sik underscored the urgent need for a supportive community framework.

In discussing the economic importance of nightclubs, he argued against their closure over the actions of a minority. “Nightclubs contribute significantly to our economy, and shutting them down because of the actions of a few individuals would be unwise,” he insisted.

Choon-Sik also commended the police’s continuous operations, as mentioned by Acting Deputy Police Commander West, Esira Bari during the meeting, recognizing the essential role of law enforcement in maintaining community security.

This conversation brings to light the shared responsibility of adults in guiding youth, while also advocating for a balanced understanding of nightlife as a vital part of the economy and culture. By fostering cooperation among families, local institutions, and law enforcement, there is hope for creating a nurturing environment for young individuals. This united effort can potentially lead to healthier development and positive influences, promoting the well-being of future generations.
