Nightclubs: Scapegoat for Youth Issues or Necessary Economic Boost?

John Jeong Choon-Sik, the president of White House Nightclub in Martintar, Nadi, recently addressed community concerns regarding the influence of nightclubs on youth during a meeting with local police. He asserted that nightclubs should be seen as venues for mature adults rather than places suitable for children.

Choon-Sik emphasized that the real negative influences on young people often come from family members and not from nightlife establishments. He pointed out that adults frequently engage in questionable behaviors, such as drinking and using inappropriate language, which children may imitate. “The responsibility lies with parents and relatives,” he remarked, urging a shift in focus towards the adult behaviors that young people observe in their homes.

To create a safer environment for youth, Choon-Sik highlighted the importance of collaboration among families, churches, and educational institutions. He cited statistics indicating that over 7,000 young people have been treated at Saint Giles Hospital this year, reflecting a pressing need for supportive frameworks within the community.

In addition to addressing social concerns, Choon-Sik defended the economic contributions of nightclubs, arguing that closing them due to the actions of a few would be detrimental to the economy. He praised the continuous law enforcement presence in the community, commending their efforts in maintaining security as noted by Acting Deputy Police Commander West, Esira Bari, during the meeting.

This discussion underscores the collective responsibility of adults in shaping children’s behavior while advocating for a balanced understanding of the positive roles nightlife can play in society. By fostering cooperation among families and local institutions, there is hope for creating a nurturing environment that leads to healthier development for future generations, while concurrently recognizing the cultural and economic significance of nightlife venues.

In summary, Choon-Sik’s perspective sheds light on the necessity of addressing parental influence and the shared responsibilities of the community, fostering an optimistic view for better youth guidance in today’s society.
