John Jeong Choon-Sik, the president of White House Nightclub in Martintar, Nadi, emphasized that nightclubs should be considered venues for mature adults rather than children. During a recent community meeting with Nadi Police at the Nadi Town Council Chamber, he addressed community concerns regarding the possible negative influence of nightclubs on the youth.
Choon-Sik asserted that it is not nightclubs themselves that influence children negatively, but rather the behaviors exhibited by family members at home. He pointed out that adults often engage in activities such as drinking, smoking, and using inappropriate language in front of children, which sets a precedent for young people to mimic these behaviors. Choon-Sik stressed that the responsibility for guiding young minds lies primarily with parents and relatives.
Moreover, he highlighted the importance of collaboration among families, churches, and educational institutions to provide the necessary guidance for youth. He noted alarming statistics from Saint Giles Hospital, which reported over 7,000 young people under their care this year, suggesting a pressing need for supportive community structures.
Choon-Sik also advocated for the economic contribution of nightclubs to the country, arguing that closing them due to the actions of a minority would be detrimental. He commended the police’s round-the-clock operations, as mentioned by Acting Deputy Police Commander West, Esira Bari, noting the crucial role of security forces in maintaining community safety.
In conclusion, this perspective sheds light on the shared responsibility of adults in shaping the behavior of youth. By fostering a community-focused approach that involves families and local institutions, there is hope for a more positive influence on young people’s lives while also recognizing the cultural and economic importance of nightlife venues.
