John Jeong Choon-Sik, the president of the White House Nightclub in Martintar, Nadi, emphasized that nightclubs cater primarily to mature adults and are not appropriate venues for children. During a community meeting with the Nadi Police at the Nadi Town Council Chamber, he addressed concerns regarding the perceived influence of nightclubs on young people.
Choon-Sik stated that the notion of nightclubs being negative influences on youth is misguided. He pointed out that the real detrimental influences often come from parents, family members, and relatives, rather than the nightlife industry itself. He cited examples of adults engaging in socially questionable behaviors, such as drinking and inappropriate language, which children may then imitate.
He advocated for a collaborative approach involving families, churches, and the education system to better guide young people. Choon-Sik also mentioned a report from doctors at Saint Giles Hospital, who indicated that they had treated over 7,000 young people this year.
Moreover, he expressed the importance of maintaining nightclubs for their contributions to the economy, asserting that it would be unwise to shut them down due to the actions of a few individuals. Choon-Sik expressed his support for the police’s continuous operations, which were commended by Acting Deputy Police Commander West, Esira Bari, during the meeting, underscoring the essential role of law enforcement in community security.
This discussion highlights the responsibility of families in shaping children’s behavior and attitudes, while also advocating for a balanced view of nightclubs as a legitimate and economically beneficial aspect of society.
By focusing on communal efforts and understanding, there is hope that young individuals can be guided positively without penalizing entire sectors of entertainment.
