Nightclub Chaos: Rugby Players Brutally Assaulted by Bouncers

Former manager of the Vusu Raiders rugby league team, Akuila Masi, expressed deep concern regarding a recent incident involving the team’s players who were violently assaulted by bouncers at a nightclub in Suva. This disturbing event has resulted in seven players being injured, with two currently in a state of unconsciousness at CWM Hospital, while three others have been admitted at Sigatoka Hospital.

Mr. Masi lamented the situation, stating that instead of providing a safe environment, those entrusted with security were involved in the violence. He emphasized the need for the affected players to receive comprehensive medical treatment and highlighted the unfortunate irony that the very individuals meant to protect Club patrons were perpetrating violence. The nature of the assault, involving the use of stools and timber against individuals who were already on the ground, is particularly alarming. Masi also mentioned plans to collaborate with law enforcement to ensure the safety of his players moving forward.

Prominent Suva lawyer Jon Apted echoed Masi’s sentiments and called upon the Fiji Police Force to take action against nightclub owners. He pointed out that stricter prosecution of nightclub licenses under the Liquor Act could have potentially prevented this incident. Apted criticized the existing $400 fine for serving alcohol to intoxicated persons, arguing that it should be amended to create a stronger deterrent and ensure safer nightclub environments.

In response to the incident, Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu confirmed that investigations are underway, with police questioning staff members who were on duty at the time of the altercation. He assured the public that injured individuals were given immediate assistance and transported to hospitals for care.

A witness to the incident, who is a close friend of the team, reported that the conflict began inside the nightclub before the players were forced outside. The rest of the team attempted to de-escalate the situation but were met with significant violence, resulting in multiple injuries.

This unfortunate incident highlights the imperative need for enhanced security measures and accountability in nightlife venues to ensure the safety of patrons. With ongoing investigations and calls for legal reform, there is hope that meaningful changes will lead to safer environments for everyone and prevent such violent occurrences in the future.
