A double-storey building in Naidovi, Cuvu, Nadroga was completely destroyed by fire early yesterday morning. The incident took place outside the Sigatoka Fire Boundary, as confirmed by Puamau Sowani, the CEO of the National Fire Authority. The Sigatoka Fire Station received an emergency call at approximately 2:30 AM.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the building engulfed in flames. They promptly worked to contain the blaze, successfully preventing it from spreading further. The fire brigade, aided by the Korolevu team, managed to extinguish the fire and address hotspots in the aftermath.

The affected building was owned by 69-year-old Hari Shankar, who was asleep inside the three-bedroom apartment with his wife when the fire broke out. Their son-in-law, Rohit Chand, 42, alerted them to the danger. The structure housed a shopping complex and four small shops on the ground floor, including a kava shop, while the second floor contained a nightclub and the owner’s residence.

Mr. Sowani reported that the fire caused 100% damage to the top floor, with estimated losses amounting to $750,000. An investigation will be launched to determine the cause of the fire. Mr. Sowani also reiterated the importance of fire safety, urging community members to remain vigilant in ensuring their homes are protected against fire hazards.

While the monetary loss is significant, thankfully, the lives of all residents were saved due to quick action and alertness. As the community learns from this unfortunate event, there is hope for improving fire safety practices in the future, which can prevent such tragedies from happening again.

In summary, a building fire in Cuvu resulted in complete destruction, causing substantial financial loss but sparing lives, prompting further investigation and a renewed call for public fire safety awareness.
