Professor Biman Prasad, the leader of the National Federation Party (NFP), has clarified the party’s leadership structure ahead of their Annual General Meeting (AGM) taking place in Sigatoka tomorrow. In an interview, Prof Prasad emphasized that according to the NFP Constitution, the appointment of the party leader does not occur during the AGM.
He explained that the role of the Parliamentary Leader functions separately from the party’s organizational structure, stating, “The founding fathers of the Party made a deliberate choice that Members of Parliament are accountable to NFP members.” He noted that reports are presented to the AGM, which is presided over by the Party President, who also chairs the Management Board and Working Committee. Prof Prasad will attend the Convention as a member rather than as an office bearer.
All positions within the party, including President, Vice-President, General-Secretary, Treasurer, and Registered Officer, are set to be contested during the AGM. He reiterated that his role as Parliamentary Leader is distinct from those elected positions.
Notably, Deputy Prime Minister Rabuka will be the keynote speaker at the upcoming NFP Convention, a first for a sitting Prime Minister at the event. Prof Prasad indicated that financial and activity reports would be presented at the Convention, and he encouraged members to participate and engage with the five NFP representatives in the Coalition Government.
The convention is scheduled to commence at 11 a.m. at the Nadroga Sangam School in Malaqereqere, Sigatoka.
