NFP Leadership Clarity Ahead of Crucial AGM: What to Expect?

The leader of the National Federation Party (NFP) in Parliament, Professor Biman Prasad, has clarified the leadership structure of the party ahead of its Annual General Meeting (AGM) taking place tomorrow in Sigatoka.

In an interview, Prof Prasad emphasized that the NFP’s Constitution explicitly states that the party leader is not appointed during the AGM. He noted that the role of Parliamentary Leader operates independently from the organizational structure of the party. According to him, the founding members of the NFP intentionally decided that Members of Parliament are accountable to NFP members.

Prof Prasad explained that they will report to the AGM, which is overseen by the party’s President. He confirmed his attendance at the Convention tomorrow as a member, not as an office bearer, stating that all positions, including President, Vice-President, General-Secretary, Treasurer, and Registered Officer, will be up for election.

Additionally, he pointed out that the leaders’ position does not get elected at the AGM, reaffirming his role as the Leader of the Party in Parliament.

Notably, the Deputy Prime Minister highlighted that this Convention is significant as it marks the first time a sitting Prime Minister will address it, with Prime Minister Rabuka set to be the keynote speaker.

During the Convention, financial reports and updates on the Party’s activities will be presented. Prof Prasad encouraged members to participate and engage with the five NFP members in the Coalition Government, inviting them to raise any issues or questions they may have, which will be addressed by the leadership.

The convention is scheduled to commence at 11 am at Nadroga Sangam School in Malaqereqere, Sigatoka.
