Professor Biman Prasad, the Leader of the National Federation Party (NFP) in Parliament, has clarified the party’s leadership structure ahead of their Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled for tomorrow in Sigatoka.
In an interview, Prof Prasad stated that the NFP’s Constitution specifies that the leadership is not determined during the AGM. He emphasized the distinction between the Parliamentary Leader and the organizational framework of the party, noting that the founding members ensured that parliamentary representatives remain accountable to NFP members.
“We present our reports to the AGM, which is presided over by the party president. The Management Board or Working Committee is also chaired by the president. I will participate in the convention tomorrow as a member,” Prof Prasad explained.
He also mentioned that all positions for office bearers will be contested at the AGM. The NFP will conduct its meeting before the convention, where key roles such as President, Vice-President, General Secretary, Treasurer, and Registered Officer will be up for election.
“I am not an office bearer; my role is as the Parliamentary Leader. According to our Constitution, the leader’s position is not elected at the AGM,” he added.
The event will mark a significant occasion as it will be the first time a sitting Prime Minister addresses the NFP Convention, with Prime Minister Rabuka anticipated to deliver the keynote speech.
At the convention, financial and activity reports of the party are expected to be presented. Prof Prasad encouraged members to engage in the meeting, where they would have the opportunity to meet the NFP’s five members in the Coalition Government and discuss issues and concerns.
The convention is set to commence at 11 am at Nadroga Sangam School in Malaqereqere, Sigatoka.
