NFP Leadership Clarified Ahead of Key Annual Meeting

Professor Biman Prasad, the leader of the National Federation Party (NFP) in Parliament, has clarified the party’s leadership structure prior to their Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled for tomorrow in Sigatoka. In an interview, Prof Prasad emphasized that the NFP Constitution clearly states that the party leader is not elected during the AGM.

He pointed out that the role of Parliamentary Leader is distinct from the party’s organizational structure. “The founding fathers of the Party made a deliberate choice that Members of Parliament are accountable to the NFP members,” he noted. According to him, reports are presented at the AGM, which is presided over by the Party President, who also chairs the Management Board and Working Committee.

Prof Prasad stated that all office bearers’ positions will be open for election at the AGM, which will occur before the convention later in the day. The positions available include President, Vice-President, General Secretary, Treasurer, and Registered Officer. He reiterated that he is not an office bearer but serves as the Parliamentary Leader and maintains that the position of leader is not subject to election at the AGM.

Additionally, the Deputy Prime Minister highlighted that this convention marks a significant occasion, as it will be the first time a sitting Prime Minister addresses the members. Prime Minister Rabuka is slated to be the keynote speaker at the event.

Financial and activity reports from the party are expected to be presented at the convention. Prof Prasad encouraged members to attend to interact with the NFP’s five representatives in the Coalition Government, inviting them to voice their issues and queries openly. The convention is set to begin at 11 am at the Nadroga Sangam School in Malaqereqere, Sigatoka.
