The leader of the National Federation Party (NFP) and Minister for Finance, Biman Prasad, has announced his intention to run in the upcoming 2026 General Election. With more than two years left until the polls, Prasad highlighted his commitment to engaging women and youth to expand the party’s presence as a key priority.
Prasad stated, “I will,” affirming his candidacy. He noted that with the government already nearly two years into its term, elections could be held anytime after three years, meaning they effectively have 18 months remaining. He expressed confidence in the party’s organization, citing its 61-year-old established constitution.
Emphasizing the NFP’s identity as a multiracial party, Prasad insisted it is not race-based and that supporters desire a government that promotes unity and cooperation. He pointed out the diverse demographic of party supporters and the presence of five members in Parliament from various communities across the nation.
During the NFP’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at the Nadroga Sangam School in Malaqereqere over the weekend, all office bearers were re-elected unopposed. Parmod Chand continues as president, alongside vice presidents Devendra Naidu, Kamala Lajendra, Ratu Esava Nabuta, Peter Saunivalu, Waisale Kanavu, and Vijay Rajnesh Prasad. The long-serving treasurer Chandu Lodhia retains his position, while Kamal Iyer continues as general secretary, and Biman Prasad serves as assistant general secretary.
“The members are pleased with the leadership and the current direction of the government,” Prasad remarked. He reflected on the vision set by the late Jayaram Reddy in 1999, asserting that it remains vibrant and is evolving. Acknowledging that mistakes and allegations of corruption are common in all governments, Prasad emphasized the importance of moving forward, expressing optimism for the country’s future over the next two decades.
