Biman Prasad, the leader of the National Federation Party (NFP) and Minister for Finance, has announced his candidacy for the 2026 General Election. With more than two years until the elections, Prasad emphasized the importance of involving women and youth to bolster the party’s growth.

“We are already almost two years into our government,” he remarked. “The election can happen anytime after three years, or even in six months; effectively, we have 18 months.”

Prasad noted that the NFP is now more organized than ever, operating under a tested constitution that has been in place for 61 years. He reaffirmed the party’s commitment to maintaining its multiracial identity, stating that it is not based on race, but rather on creating a unified government that emphasizes collaboration, unity, and inclusivity.

At the party’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at the Nadroga Sangam School, all office bearers were re-elected unopposed. Labasa businessman Parmod Chand will continue as president, alongside vice presidents Devendra Naidu, Kamala Lajendra, Ratu Esava Nabuta, Peter Saunivalu, Waisale Kanavu, and Vijay Rajnesh Prasad. Chandu Lodhia remains treasurer, a role he has fulfilled since 2016, while Kamal Iyer serves as general secretary and Biman Prasad takes on the role of assistant general secretary.

“The members are happy with the leadership and the government’s progress,” Prasad stated. He highlighted the party’s ongoing commitment to the vision established by the late Jayaram Reddy, believing that the principles established in 1999 are still relevant and thriving today.

Prasad acknowledged the usual challenges faced by governments, including mistakes and allegations of corruption and mismanagement, which he noted occur in every country. He called for resilience, encouraging unity among the populace as he expressed optimism for the country’s future over the next 20 years.
