The leader of the National Federation Party (NFP) and Minister for Finance, Biman Prasad, has announced his intention to run in the upcoming 2026 General Election. With more than two years until the elections take place, Prasad emphasized the importance of engaging women and youth to strengthen the party’s base.
“We are already nearly two years into our term. The elections could come at any time after three years, or within the next six months; essentially, we have about 18 months,” he remarked. He expressed confidence in the party’s organization, highlighting its 61-year-old established constitution.
Prasad reiterated that the NFP maintains its status as a multiracial party, distinct from race-based politics, and that its supporters desire a government focused on unity and collaboration. He noted the presence of a diverse crowd at a recent event and pointed out that the party has five representatives in Parliament, showcasing the involvement of the iTaukei community.
During the party’s Annual General Meeting held at the Nadroga Sangam School in Malaqereqere, all office bearers were re-elected without opposition. Labasa businessman Parmod Chand will continue as president, joined by vice presidents Devendra Naidu, Kamala Lajendra, Ratu Esava Nabuta, Peter Saunivalu, Waisale Kanavu, and Vijay Rajnesh Prasad. Chandu Lodhia retains his position as treasurer, a role he has held since 2016, while Kamal Iyer remains the general secretary and Bimal Prasad serves as the assistant general secretary.
“Members are pleased with the current leadership and the direction of the government,” Prasad stated. He also reflected on the vision of the late Jayaram Reddy, asserting that the objectives established in 1999 are still relevant and continue to flourish.
Acknowledging that governments and leaders make mistakes and that allegations of corruption and mismanagement arise in every country, Prasad urged members to remain forward-thinking. “Let’s move on. This country will thrive in the next 20 years,” he concluded.
