The leader of the National Federation Party (NFP) and Minister for Finance, Biman Prasad, has announced his intention to run in the 2026 General Election. With more than two years left until the polls, Prasad emphasized that prioritizing the engagement of women and youth to strengthen the party is crucial.
“I will,” he stated. “We are already nearly two years into our government term. The election could occur anytime after three years or within six months; effectively, we have about 18 months left.”
Prasad highlighted that the NFP is well-organized, supported by a 61-year-old constitution. He reaffirmed the party’s commitment to being a multiracial entity, focusing on unity and collective freedom rather than race-based politics.
Reflecting on the diverse demographics of their supporters, he noted that the NFP has already secured five seats in Parliament, with involvement from the iTaukei community across the nation.
Recently, the party held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the Nadroga Sangam School in Malaqereqere, Nadroga, where all office bearers were re-elected unopposed. Labasa businessman Parmod Chand continues as president, supported by vice presidents Devendra Naidu, Kamala Lajendra, Ratu Esava Nabuta, Peter Saunivalu, Waisale Kanavu, and Vijay Rajnesh Prasad. Chandu Lodhia remains treasurer, while Kamal Iyer serves as general secretary, and Bimal Prasad is the assistant general secretary.
“The members are satisfied with our leaders and the government’s performance,” Prasad remarked, recalling the vision of the late Jayaram Reddy, which remains alive and evolving. He acknowledged that mistakes and allegations of corruption occur in all governments and urged everyone to focus on the future.
“My message is clear to all: Let’s move forward. This country will be great in 20 years.”
