The National Fire Authority (NFA) has reiterated its dedication to financially supporting families of deceased firefighters through its compassionate policy. This initiative provides essential assistance to the loved ones of firefighters who lose their lives in the line of duty.
As part of this program, NFA’s medical insurer offers a benefit of $10,000 to the next of kin of any firefighter who dies while serving the organization. This was recently emphasized when NFA CEO, Puamau Sowane, presented the Term Life benefit to Sei Kalini Tarusila, the widow of talented firefighter Peceli Maisuva.
Maisuva, who was stationed at Levuka Fire Station, sadly passed away in October after a brief illness while still actively serving. During the benefit handover, Sowane expressed pride in the courage and commitment exhibited by firefighters every day. “This policy is one way we can express our gratitude for their service and ensure that their families are supported during such challenging times,” he stated.
Launched in 2022 following the tragic death of a firefighter, this initiative has successfully provided financial relief to families of fallen firefighters. Since its inception, the program has extended benefits to the families of three additional firefighters who also lost their lives in service. In 2023, two firefighters passed away while fulfilling their duties. Tragically, four more firefighters have died in 2024, each of their families receiving the $10,000 support.
To date, the NFA has allocated a total of $70,000 through this benevolent policy. Sowane emphasized that this initiative represents NFA’s ongoing commitment to honoring the sacrifices made by its firefighters. “We remain dedicated to supporting our staff and their families, acknowledging their vital contributions to both the organization and the communities they serve,” he added.
This compassionate approach not only provides financial relief but also showcases the NFA’s commitment to the well-being of its first responders and their families. It’s a commendable effort that highlights the value of community and support in times of need.
In summary, the NFA’s initiative serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by firefighters while aiming to ensure that their families are cared for in times of tragedy. It reinforces the bonds of community, respect, and gratitude for those who dedicate their lives to protecting others.
