The National Fire Authority (NFA) is reaffirming its dedication to supporting the families of deceased firefighters through its compassionate policy. This initiative is designed to provide essential financial assistance to the families of firefighters who lose their lives while serving the NFA.
As part of this policy, the NFA’s medical insurer offers a $10,000 benefit to the next of kin of any firefighter who dies in the line of duty. This commitment was recently demonstrated when NFA’s CEO, Puamau Sowane, presented a Term Life benefit to Sei Kalini Tarusila, the widow of firefighter Peceli Maisuva, who passed away in October after a brief illness while on duty.
Mr. Sowane expressed pride in the courage displayed by firefighters and emphasized that this policy is a way to honor their service by ensuring that their families receive support during difficult times. The initiative, which commenced in 2022 after the tragic loss of a firefighter, has extended its financial relief to the families of three additional firefighters who tragically died while serving. In 2023 alone, two firefighters succumbed while serving with the authority.
In 2024, four more firefighters have lost their lives, with each family receiving the $10,000 benefit. To date, the NFA has allocated a total of $70,000 through this compassionate policy.
Mr. Sowane reinforced the NFA’s commitment to honoring the sacrifices of their firefighters, recognizing their invaluable contributions to the organization and the communities they serve.
In summary, the NFA’s initiative provides a valuable safety net for families grappling with the loss of their loved ones in the line of duty. This policy not only offers financial support but also serves as a testament to the organization’s commitment to honoring and remembering the sacrifices made by these brave individuals. It’s a poignant reminder of the importance of community support during challenging times.
This ongoing support highlights a positive aspect of how institutions can take responsibility and care for their members’ families, ensuring they are not left alone in their grief.
