The National Fire Authority (NFA) is reaffirming its dedication to supporting the families of fallen firefighters through its compassionate policy. This initiative is crucial for assisting the relatives of firefighters who tragically lose their lives while serving under the NFA.
Under this policy, the NFA’s medical insurer provides a benefit of $10,000 to the next of kin of any firefighter who dies in the line of duty. This was recently demonstrated when NFA Chief Executive Officer Puamau Sowane presented a Term Life benefit of $10,000 to Sei Kalini Tarusila, the wife of the late qualified firefighter Peceli Maisuva, who passed away in October after a short illness while actively serving at the Levuka Fire Station.
During the presentation, Mr. Sowane expressed pride in the bravery and dedication of firefighters, stating that this policy serves as a way to show gratitude for their service and provide support to families during difficult times.
This initiative began in 2022 after the loss of a firefighter and has since extended to the families of three additional firefighters who have died in service. In 2023, two firefighters lost their lives while serving the authority. In 2024, four more firefighters have unfortunately passed away, with each family receiving the $10,000 benefit. To date, the NFA has distributed a total of $70,000 to support bereaved families.
Mr. Sowane emphasized that this initiative reflects the NFA’s commitment to honoring the service and sacrifice of their firefighters, ensuring that they continue to support their staff and their families—recognizing the invaluable contributions they make to both the organization and the communities they protect.
This compassionate policy not only provides financial support but also reflects a broader commitment to valuing and honoring the essential work of firefighters, showcasing how organizations can positively impact the lives of families during their most challenging times.
Summary: The NFA is dedicated to financially supporting the families of firefighters who die in the line of duty, providing a $10,000 benefit to next of kin and emphasizing the importance of honoring their service. Since the policy’s inception in 2022, the NFA has distributed a total of $70,000 to help families during their toughest moments.
