The National Fire Authority (NFA) is reaffirming its dedication to financially supporting the families of firefighters who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving the community through its compassionate policy. This important initiative offers vital assistance to the families of firefighters who lose their lives in the line of duty.
As part of this policy, NFA’s medical insurer provides a benefit of $10,000 to the next of kin of any firefighter who dies while serving. Recently, NFA’s Chief Executive Officer, Puamau Sowane, had the honor of presenting a $10,000 Term Life benefit to Sei Kalini Tarusila, the widow of firefighter Peceli Maisuva. Mr. Maisuva, stationed at Levuka Fire Station, passed away in October due to a short illness, demonstrating the risks that firefighters face even outside of direct emergencies.
During the benefit handover, Mr. Sowane expressed deep pride in the courage and commitment shown by NFA firefighters every day. He emphasized that this financial support is a gesture of gratitude for their service and a way to provide assistance to their families during incredibly difficult times.
This initiative, which was launched in 2022 following the tragic loss of a firefighter, has since offered essential financial relief to the families of those who have died in service. In just three years, NFA has extended the program to the families of four firefighters who tragically passed away, with two of those incidents occurring in 2023 alone. This year has already seen the loss of four additional firefighters, with each family receiving the $10,000 benefit, amounting to a total of $70,000 distributed through this compassionate policy.
Mr. Sowane reiterated the NFA’s commitment to honoring the sacrifice and bravery of its firefighters, highlighting their invaluable contributions to both the authority and the communities they safeguard.
This initiative not only provides financial support but also serves as an acknowledgment of the sacrifices made by these dedicated individuals, ensuring that their families are not left to bear the burden alone in their time of grief.
In summary, the NFA’s compassionate policy stands as a beacon of support for the families of brave firefighters, demonstrating a robust commitment to those who serve selflessly in protecting their communities. This ongoing investment serves as a reminder of the respected role of firefighters and the importance of community solidarity during challenging times.
