The National Fire Authority (NFA) has officially inaugurated its Paramedics Ambulance Department and welcomed new paramedics at their headquarters in Suva. This significant development aims to enhance their ability to address medical emergencies more effectively.
According to NFA Chief Executive Officer Puamau Sowane, the ambulance service was previously managed by operational officers, which led to inefficient use of government funds due to lack of proper oversight. The establishment of a dedicated Paramedics Department is a response to these challenges, with the goal of better preparing their professionals for emergency medical situations.
Sowane emphasized the importance of this new department in improving response times and patient care. A new center for paramedics is being constructed at the fire station, and while specialized paramedics are not yet fully available, some firefighters have received training through the Ministry of Health.
The newly formed Emergency Ambulance and Paramedic Health Services Department is focused on protecting both victims and firefighters during incidents, with paramedics positioned at the scene of fires to provide immediate care.
In addition to the nine ambulances already operational, the NFA plans to introduce six more paramedic ambulances to further enhance their services. These ambulances are specially designed for pre-hospital care, transforming them into more than just transport vehicles.
In closing, Sowane urged the community to exercise caution during the festive season to prevent fire-related incidents.
This initiative marks a proactive step towards improving emergency medical services in the region and represents a commitment to community safety and welfare. The establishment of dedicated paramedic services will undoubtedly strengthen the response to emergencies, benefiting the community as a whole.
