NFA CEO’s Fire Station Inspections: What’s Next for Fiji’s Fire Safety?

The biennial inspections of 19 fire stations across the Central/Eastern, Western, and Northern Divisions conducted by Puamau Sowane, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Fire Authority (NFA), have concluded.

The inspections of the Levuka and Taveuni stations are still pending, with Levuka’s examination taking place this morning. Last week, Mr. Sowane completed thorough inspections at the stations located in Korolevu, Sigatoka, Nadi, Lautoka, Ba, Tavua, Rakiraki, Nabouwalu, Seaqaqa, Labasa, and Savusavu.

During these inspections, Mr. Sowane focused on critical areas alongside a high-level team, which included the Chief Fire Officer, Manager of Legal and International Affairs, Manager of Fire Safety Compliance and Properties, Manager of Risk & Audit, and the Station Officer for Standards & Discipline. Key points of evaluation included cleanliness levels at the stations, adherence to OSHA regulations, and the implementation of the NFA’s 5S principles, which prioritize productivity and organization.

Mr. Sowane underscored the importance of strict compliance with disciplinary guidelines and the successful completion of Required Fitness Level (RFL) assessments. He also highlighted the necessity for continuous education and professional development among NFA members, particularly encouraging them to pursue certification as fire engineers from the UK-based Institute of Fire Engineers (IFE).

Notably, Mr. Sowane expressed a desire to meet the demand for licensed local fire engineers, which currently exists. He urged officers to engage in postsecondary education, noting that the Authority supports this initiative by offering full-time study leave with pay to at least three employees currently enrolled in higher education programs, reinforcing the NFA’s dedication to lifelong learning.

The NFA’s Human Resources Policy has experienced substantial updates, with officers being informed about how these changes may impact their roles and responsibilities. Mr. Sowane reiterated the NFA’s strategic goal of reducing structural fires by 5% annually, a target that remains a crucial element of the Authority’s mission.

During his visits, he took the opportunity to respond to officers’ questions and address any issues they raised. Mr. Sowane concluded his tour by expressing gratitude to the officers for their ongoing dedication and service, which he deemed essential to the NFA’s success in safeguarding communities throughout Fiji.
