Newly Admitted Lawyers Urged to Uphold Integrity and Professionalism

Acting Chief Justice Salesi Temo encouraged 45 newly admitted lawyers at their bar admission ceremony at the Grand Pacific Hotel to familiarize themselves with the Code of Edicts.

Justice Temo emphasized the importance of upholding good conduct in the legal profession, highlighting that years of study should culminate in integrity and professionalism. He stated that maintaining ethical standards is essential for strengthening the legal profession and building public trust.

He urged the new lawyers to approach their work with diligence, respect for the law, and a commitment to justice. By doing so, they can make a positive impact on the legal community and effectively serve their clients and society.

Justice Temo stressed the critical role of ethics in the legal field, especially within a diverse society, and reiterated that integrity and professionalism are vital for fostering public trust and upholding the rule of law in Fiji. He remarked that encouraging good conduct not only builds a robust legal community but also improves the overall administration of justice in the country.

He pointed out that honesty is paramount for lawyers entering the profession and shared a scenario in which clients were not properly treated. He described the stress experienced by lawyers, clients, and judicial officers during such situations, stating, “The last thing we need is someone who’s not assisting us.”
