New Zealand Surgeons Transform Lives in Fiji with Complex Surgeries

Friends of Fiji Health, a charitable organization based in New Zealand, has recently conducted nearly 20 intricate surgeries at Labasa Divisional Hospital. This team of 12, which includes doctors, nurses, and specialized staff, has built a strong rapport with the hospital since their initial visit in 2014.

Arriving on July 26 and concluding their visit on August 4, the group was guided by trustee Avinash Sharma, a general surgeon specializing in oncology. They tackled a variety of complex surgical cases, ranging from head and neck surgeries to abdominal procedures. “Patients aged between 50 and 100 were assessed, and those with the most urgent needs were given priority for surgery,” Mr. Sharma stated.

The surgical team comprised three surgeons, an anaesthetist, and theatre staff, including three nurses and an anaesthetic technician. Although the number of surgeries performed each day varied, Mr. Sharma emphasized their aim for quality over quantity. “Some surgeries took between three to five hours per patient, but our focus is on delivering the best possible care,” he said.

In addition to their surgical efforts, the team donated advanced medical equipment to Labasa Hospital, such as anaesthetic machines, operating tables, and laparoscopy towers. This contribution is intended to enhance future surgical outcomes and bolster local healthcare services.

Sharma, who hails from Lautoka, expressed his pride in being able to contribute to his country. “We are honored to return and serve the local community,” he remarked. Dr. Amrita Kumar, a general practitioner and the coordinator for the team, shared similar sentiments.
