In the early hours of New Year’s Day 2025, the Northern Division experienced its first fire incident when a four-bedroom residence in Waiqele, Labasa, went up in flames. The homeowners, Shalenee Devi and Nileshwar Prasad, were in New Zealand celebrating the holidays with family when they received the heartbreaking news from a relative about the fire.
“Our caretaker was away for the New Year holiday when the incident occurred around 3am,” Devi shared. She expressed her gratitude towards a neighbor who promptly alerted the National Fire Authority (NFA) about the blaze. Despite having limited resources, firefighters made commendable efforts to extinguish the fire. Prasad noted that they faced challenges such as a single water tank and a damaged hose but still managed to do their utmost.
The fire led to significant destruction, claiming two cars and partially damaging two vans. The couple suspects the blaze might have been arson, referencing previous unsettling events like threats, stone-throwing, and an attempted burglary at their shop near Waiqele Airport. Devi expressed hope that authorities would act swiftly to bring those responsible to justice.
Despite the estimated damage of $250,000, the family remains optimistic. They have lodged a police complaint and trust that the investigation will reveal the truth and help prevent similar incidents in the future.
Puamau Sowane, the CEO of the NFA, conveyed his sympathy for the affected family. He explained the difficulties faced by firefighters in the area, which lacks fire hydrants and nearby water sources, underscoring the importance of caution for residents living outside town limits.
Acting Divisional Police Commander North, Superintendent Eroni Soqosoqo, reported that an investigation is underway, pending the NFA’s findings. This incident marks the first fire report in the Northern Division for the year.
This unfortunate event serves as a reminder of the importance of community vigilance and preparedness during the fire season. With collaborative efforts from residents and local authorities, there is hope for improved safety measures and swift justice for the victims. As the investigation unfolds, the community can unite in support of the affected family and work towards preventing future incidents.
