The birth of a child is always a momentous event, and it takes on an even more significant meaning when it occurs on New Year’s Day. Just 44 minutes after midnight on Tuesday, Mereseini Likucokocoko celebrated the arrival of her baby boy at the Suva Colonial War Memorial Hospital, arriving 11 days earlier than expected. The newborn weighed in at 2.85 kilograms.

Despite facing complications and discomfort during labor, Ms. Likucokocoko expressed her heartfelt gratitude towards the midwives and medical staff for their attentive care. “It was a surprise; we did not expect him until January 11, but I thank God for this healthy gift,” she remarked, adding that this occasion would be cherished by her family forever.

In a similar joyful twist, Akeneta Ranadi, 29, welcomed a baby girl at Nadi Hospital, also catching her family off guard as her due date wasn’t until January 8. Her daughter weighed 3.78 kilograms, and Ms. Ranadi described giving birth on New Year’s Day as a blessing, stating, “This is the first blessing of the year, and I’m hopeful for more blessings in the months ahead.” She resides alone with her children while her partner works overseas, and she views the new addition as a sign of prosperity.

Meanwhile, in northern Fiji, Senimili Duavokavoka from Ligau Village on Kia Island welcomed her son, Suliasi Vunibola Turaganivalu, at 2 a.m. after being rushed to Labasa Hospital on New Year’s Eve. Weighing 3.7 kilograms, Ms. Duavokavoka described her son as the perfect gift that completes her family, expressing her overwhelming joy and relief upon hearing his first cry. Her husband, Seresio Turaganivlau, shared in the pride of becoming a father, marking the occasion as a profoundly significant moment.

This New Year’s Day has brought immense joy and hope to families in Fiji, symbolizing new beginnings and blessings for what lies ahead.
