The streets of Labasa Town were filled with vibrant energy recently as the Washington Tin Band performed, bringing a festive highlight to the community after the cancellation of the New Year’s street party in the Northern Division. This 13-member band from Lami Village in Suva entertained audiences with lively tunes made from empty drums, tins, sticks, and containers outside Dutt’s Shoe World and Chinatown Shops.
Band leader Mosese Ravadra shared that their tour began earlier in the week in Bua and aims to spread New Year cheer through music. “We’re spending a few days in Labasa visiting villages before heading to Savusavu and Taveuni by the end of the week,” he noted. This marks the second consecutive year that the band has traveled from Viti Levu to Vanua Levu to share their joyous spirit during the festive season.
During their performances, spectators are invited to contribute by placing donations in a tin set among the musicians. Ravadra emphasized that the proceeds will support band members, especially students, with their back-to-school expenses. “There’s no fixed amount; whatever the generous people of the friendly North bless us with will be used for our children,” he stated.
Additionally, a younger group of band members is performing on the streets of Suva, ensuring that the New Year’s spirit resonates with everyone. “Our goal is to include everyone in this celebration and bring joy wherever we go,” Ravadra explained.
The initiative by the Washington Tin Band not only combines entertainment with community support but also exemplifies the importance of nurturing local culture and addressing educational needs. As they kick off the year with their heartfelt performances, they foster community bonds and remind us all of the vital role music plays in uplifting spirits and creating unity among people.
As the new year unfolds, the efforts of the Washington Tin Band resonate as a beacon of positivity and hope, showcasing how shared experiences can significantly impact community well-being. Their commitment to spreading joy through music during this festive time is indeed commendable.
