The vibrant streets of Labasa Town erupted with energy yesterday as the Washington Tin Band delivered a lively performance, marking a joyous event after the cancellation of the 2024 New Year’s street festivities in the Northern Division. This 13-member band, hailing from Lami Village in Suva, captivated audiences with their unique musical style, crafted from empty drums, tins, sticks, and other containers, as they performed outside Dutt’s Shoe World and Chinatown Shops.

Band leader Mosese Ravadra shared that their entertainment tour commenced earlier in the week in Bua. “We’re spending a few days in Labasa visiting villages before heading to Savusavu and Taveuni by week’s end,” he noted, emphasizing the purpose of their tour is to spread New Year cheer through music. This marks the second consecutive year that the band has traveled from Viti Levu to Vanua Levu to share joy during the New Year celebrations.

During their performances, the band invites audience contributions by placing a tin among the musicians. Ravadra explained that the funds collected will support the band members, especially students, with their back-to-school expenses. “There’s no fixed amount; whatever the generous people of the friendly North bless us with will be used for our children, who have dedicated their time to perform during this tour,” he stated.

In addition to the Labasa performances, Ravadra mentioned another group of younger band members entertaining on the streets of Suva, ensuring that the New Year’s spirit is felt by all. “Our goal is to include everyone in this celebration and bring joy wherever we go,” he emphasized.
