The streets of Labasa Town were filled with vibrant energy yesterday as the Washington Tin Band delivered an exhilarating performance, serving as a festive highlight following the absence of a New Year’s street party in the Northern Division for 2024. This lively 13-member band, hailing from Lami Village in Suva, entertained the crowd outside Dutt’s Shoe World and the Chinatown Shops, captivating spectators with music created from empty drums, tins, sticks, and containers.
Band leader Mosese Ravadra shared that their entertainment tour commenced earlier in the week in Bua and includes stops in Labasa, Savusavu, and Taveuni by week’s end. “Our tour’s purpose is to convey New Year wishes through music,” Mr. Ravadra expressed. This marks the second consecutive year that the band has traveled from Viti Levu to Vanua Levu, spreading festive cheer and joy for the New Year.
During the performances, a tin is placed among the musicians and a dancer, encouraging attendees to contribute financially. Mr. Ravadra explained that the funds gathered would support the band members, especially students, with their back-to-school needs. He emphasized, “There’s no fixed amount; whatever the kind-hearted people of the friendly North provide will go towards our children, who have dedicated their time to play music during this tour.”
He also mentioned that a second group of younger musicians is performing on the streets of Suva, ensuring that everyone experiences the New Year’s spirit. “Our aim is to include everyone in this celebration and bring joy wherever we go,” he added.
The Washington Tin Band’s initiative not only provides entertainment but also fosters community support, making their efforts a meaningful way to kick off the year for families in the North and beyond.
This heartwarming story reminds us of the power of music to unite and inspire communities, especially during festive times. The band’s commitment to supporting local families while spreading joy showcases a great example of how art can serve a dual purpose.
In summary, the Washington Tin Band’s performances serve as a significant cultural and community effort, enriching lives as they spread New Year’s wishes and support educational needs. This not only enhances the festive spirit but also strengthens community bonds.
