Early on New Year’s Day 2025, the Northern Division experienced its first fire incident when a four-bedroom house in Waiqele, Labasa, was completely consumed by flames. The homeowners, Shalenee Devi and Nileshwar Prasad, were on holiday in New Zealand when they received the distressing news from a family member.
According to Ms. Devi, their caretaker was away for the New Year holiday during the incident, which occurred around 3 AM. She expressed appreciation for their neighbor who promptly notified the National Fire Authority (NFA) about the fire. Firefighters faced immense challenges; due to limited resources, including only one water tank and a damaged hose, they worked diligently to control the blaze, as noted by Mr. Prasad.
The fire caused significant damage, affecting not only the house but also destroying two cars and partially damaging two vans. The couple suspects arson due to prior incidents involving threats and vandalism at their shop near Waiqele Airport. Despite the difficulties they face, Ms. Devi remains hopeful that authorities will take swift action against those responsible.
The estimated damage is around $250,000; however, the family maintains a positive outlook. They have filed a police report and voiced their confidence in the authorities’ ability to address the situation and prevent future occurrences.
In response, Puamau Sowane, the NFA’s chief executive officer, expressed sympathy for the family, highlighting the area’s lack of fire hydrants and water sources that hinder firefighting efforts. He urged residents living outside town boundaries to be especially cautious due to the distance from fire stations.
Acting Divisional Police Commander North Superintendent Eroni Soqosoqo confirmed that an investigation is underway and stated they are awaiting the NFA’s report to determine their next steps. This incident marks the first fire report in the Northern Division for the year.
The resilience shown by Shalenee Devi and Nileshwar Prasad in the face of such adversity is commendable. Their hope for justice and safety for their community shines through during this challenging time. The collaboration between local authorities and residents could play a pivotal role in addressing safety concerns and preventing future incidents, highlighting the importance of community vigilance and cooperation.
