The Fiji Bitter Mataso 7s tournament is set to introduce an innovative competition format that fosters inclusivity and competition between established teams and emerging grassroots teams. This exciting development was announced by James Vunituraga, the tournament director, during the launch event held at the head offices of Paradise Beverages Fiji Limited in Suva.

Under the new format, teams will be categorized into two distinct groups: an elite category for top-ranking teams and a grassroots category for developing teams. These teams will be further divided into four pools, with the winners moving through the elimination stages of the tournament. This structure allows grassroots teams the opportunity to compete against more experienced squads, potentially culminating in matches against elite teams.

Vunituraga expressed his enthusiasm for this new arrangement, emphasizing that it provides a platform for grassroots teams to showcase their skills and aspire to compete at higher levels. He noted, “It’s giving an opportunity for the grassroots level to play against each other and come out on top to meet the elite teams.” The tournament will feature various awards, including cups, bowls, and shields, encouraging participation and competition across all levels.

Alfaio Tekavei, a sponsorship and events specialist for Fiji Bitter, echoed these sentiments, highlighting that the new format would create a captivating tournament experience with significant benefits for grassroots teams.

The Mataso 7s tournament is scheduled to take place from November 15 to 17 at Churchill Park in Lautoka. This initiative not only strengthens the development of rugby in Fiji but also promises to engage fans with thrilling matches showcasing talent at both ends of the competition spectrum.

Overall, the introduction of this format is a positive step toward nurturing young talent and ensuring that all teams have the chance to shine on a prominent stage, fostering a spirit of camaraderie and growth in Fijian rugby.
