Former High Court judge Justice Filimoni Jitoko has been nominated by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to assume the role of Speaker of the House. This announcement was made by Mr. Rabuka, who confirmed that the Cabinet has reached a decision regarding the new Speaker.
Justice Jitoko has a distinguished background, having previously served as the chief justice of the Nauru Supreme Court from 2017 and as the Registrar from 2015 to 2017. His educational achievements include graduating from the University of the South Pacific in 1969 and earning a Bachelor of Law from Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand, in 1978.
According to the 2013 Constitution, the position of Speaker becomes vacant upon the first meeting of Parliament after a general election or if the individual assumes another public office. The Constitution further mandates that at the first sitting of Parliament after a general election, a Speaker shall be elected by a simple majority, provided that the candidate is not a current member of Parliament.
The upcoming parliamentary session is set to commence on December 7, which the nomination will precede.
This nomination reflects a significant step towards enhancing the legislative processes in the country, as Justice Jitoko brings a wealth of legal experience and expertise to the role. His appointment could foster a more robust parliamentary environment, encouraging constructive debates and the effective implementation of policies. The potential for Justice Jitoko to contribute positively to parliamentary affairs is indeed promising, suggesting an optimistic direction for governance.
