The RC Manubhai 7’/14” Nataleira Sevens has announced exciting new by-laws aimed at enhancing their tournament, which is set to take place from December 12-14 at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori. Tournament director Solo Finau shared with SUNsports that a newly introduced bonus points system is designed to benefit all participating teams.
The tournament aims to attract around 80 teams across four tiers: Tier One features champion teams, Tier Two includes regular teams, Tier Three is dedicated to senior women’s teams, and Tier Four is forUnder-19 participants. Finau emphasized the focus on innovative strategies to rejuvenate interest in sevens tournaments across Fiji. He believes these new formats will not only support local players’ development but also provide financial benefits for the teams.
Finau noted the importance of adapting to the game’s demands, saying, “We want local players to understand how to perform in critical situations.” He pointed out that tactics seen in international settings, like scoring via drop goals in World Cups, should be utilized by teams striving for victory.
The tournament will also feature instant rewards distributed immediately after matches. For instance, players who score a coast-to-coast individual try from their own “In-Goal space” will receive a $100 bonus. The team captain will also earn $100 for a coast-to-coast team try. Additional cash prizes will be awarded for the most successful teams in converted tries, drop goals, and penalty goals, which can lead to $100 per category after the tournament. Furthermore, the team achieving the fastest try—matching or beating Alosio Naduva’s record of 6.78 seconds or within 7 seconds—will also secure $100.
The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) has sanctioned this tournament, which will officially launch on December 6, bringing a fresh and competitive atmosphere to the sport in the region.
In summary, the RC Manubhai 7’/14” Nataleira Sevens is taking a significant step towards revitalizing sevens rugby with innovative rule changes and incentive structures, promising to enhance both the competitive spirit and financial returns for teams. This reflects a hopeful commitment to the development of rugby in Fiji, igniting enthusiasm both on and off the field.
