New School on the Horizon for Matuku: A Community’s Hope

Education Minister Aseri Radrodro has announced that the Ministry of Education will explore the possibility of establishing a new secondary school on Matuku in Lau, following concerns raised by villagers about the increasing migration of young people from rural areas to urban centers.

Radrodro explained that discussions about this initiative had taken place in the past, and efforts are now focused on moving toward the construction phase. “This initiative began long ago but remained unfinished. The community seeks the Ministry of Education’s support to resume and complete the development of the proposed secondary school,” he stated.

Village leader Tomu Tuivaga highlighted that a secondary school in Yaroi Village would offer local children access to quality education, addressing worries about social issues and drug-related activities that discourage many parents from moving their children to Viti Levu.

“We can ensure our children receive quality education while remaining in the safety of our home environment, thus protecting them from the risks associated with urban living,” Tuivaga said.
