The Self Care Retreat (Fiji) Hub, dedicated to supporting women cancer survivors, officially opened its doors yesterday in Nabua, marking an important step forward in the assistance available to those affected by cancer.
Mereane Vavataga, the chief executive officer of Self Care Retreat Fiji, emphasized the significance of this new facility. “It’s an oasis where women cancer survivors can come when sickness overwhelms them,” she stated. “They can rest here and find nourishment. It’s a safe space to discuss their experiences and the challenges they face.”
Founded in 2021, the NGO aims to aid women in their spiritual, emotional, and mental recovery after experiencing cancer. Vavataga explained that twice a year, they invite different groups of survivors to a hotel to foster relationships and build trust. Upon returning, participants engage in a three-week Bible study program focused on spiritual, emotional, and inner healing.
Senior Pastor Manasa Kolivuso of Faith Harvest Church in Nausori officiated the opening and praised the initiative. “Thank you for establishing this hub as a safe haven where individuals can connect with those who care,” he said.
Cancer survivor Bulamarau Tikoduadua delivered a heartfelt testimony during the event, recalling her challenging journey. “A year ago, I was completely paralyzed. My cancer experience was brief but intense,” she shared. Her story underscored the necessity of support networks like the Self Care Retreat Hub. “I’m truly thankful for this organization because life after cancer treatment can feel very isolating,” she added.
Vavataga also revealed future aspirations to open a hospice, indicating this is just the beginning for the organization. To support their operations, Self Care Retreat Fiji continues to depend on donations and partnerships. Vavataga mentioned her commitment, stating that she even shaved her head earlier this month to help raise funds as part of the ‘Shave it or Save it’ campaign.
