The Self Care Retreat (Fiji) Hub, a dedicated space for women who are cancer survivors, was inaugurated yesterday in Nabua, marking a pivotal moment in support for these individuals.
Mereane Vavataga, CEO of Self Care Retreat Fiji, emphasized the significance of this new facility. “It’s an oasis where women cancer survivors can come when sickness overwhelms them,” Vavataga stated. She highlighted that the hub provides a secure environment for survivors to rest, find nourishment, and discuss their experiences and challenges.
Founded in 2021, the organization aims to assist women in their spiritual, emotional, and mental recovery. “We conduct biannual retreats for different groups of survivors at a hotel to foster relationships and build trust. Upon returning, we guide them through a three-week Bible study focused on spiritual and emotional healing,” she explained.
Senior Pastor Manasa Kolivuso of Faith Harvest Church in Nausori, who presided over the opening ceremony, praised this initiative, expressing gratitude for establishing a sanctuary where individuals can connect with like-minded people.
Cancer survivor Bulamarau Tikoduadua shared her inspirational story during the event. Reflecting on her experience, she said, “A year ago today, I was completely paralyzed. My cancer journey was short but aggressive.” Her narrative underscored the urgent need for supportive resources like the Self Care Retreat Hub.
Tikoduadua expressed her appreciation for the organization, noting the loneliness often felt after cancer treatment. Meanwhile, Vavataga mentioned the organization’s aspirations to establish a hospice, stating that this new hub is merely the start of their efforts. The Self Care Retreat Fiji is actively seeking donations and partnerships to ensure its sustainability. “Even for this building, I had to shave my hair to raise funds,” she shared, referring to her participation in the ‘Shave it or Save it’ campaign earlier this month.
