As of January this year, the iTaukei Affairs Ministry and the Environment Ministry in Fiji have instituted new regulations regarding the import and export of tabua, or whale’s tooth, which holds significant cultural importance for the iTaukei people. These new measures will require approval from both ministries for the trade of tabua, ensuring tighter oversight and compliance with environmental standards.

This initiative reflects a commitment to enhancing regulatory enforcement around the tabua trade, with special attention given to the conservation of species. While there is no set quota for tabua imports, the authorities will monitor the monthly export limit of 16 tabuas closely. It is important for individuals wishing to take a tabua abroad to secure the necessary permissions from both Fiji’s Ministry of Environment and the respective authorities in their destination countries, particularly since tabua imports into the United States are completely prohibited.

The approval process will follow a first-come, first-served basis, which means planning ahead is crucial. Last-minute requests can lead to conflicts with the existing quota. Additionally, all involved parties are encouraged to comply with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES Act) and relevant Customs Regulation frameworks to support global conservation efforts.

These regulations not only protect the cultural heritage of the iTaukei people but also contribute to the preservation of marine biodiversity, which is a hopeful step towards sustainable management of natural resources in Fiji.

In summary, these new rules signify a proactive approach to balance cultural heritage with environmental responsibility, fostering a greater understanding of the importance of wildlife conservation among the iTaukei community and beyond.
