As of January this year, Fiji’s iTaukei Affairs Ministry, in partnership with the Environment Ministry, has implemented a new approval system for the import and export of the ‘tabua,’ or whale’s tooth, which holds significant cultural importance for the iTaukei community. This move reflects a commitment to maintaining traditional practices while ensuring environmental protection and compliance with international trade regulations.

The ministries have established stricter controls on the tabua trade, emphasizing responsible management of this valuable resource. Although there is currently no limit on the number of tabuas that can be imported, the monthly export is capped at 16, necessitating prior permissions from both the Ministry of Environment in Fiji and relevant authorities in the recipient country.

It is crucial to note that the import and export of tabuas to the United States is completely prohibited. Approval letters and permits will be issued on a ‘first-come, first-served’ basis, encouraging those intending to transport a tabua to plan their requests in advance to avoid conflicts with the monthly quota.

The enforcement of this protocol is aligned with the goals of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES Act) to promote sustainable practices and conservation, ensuring that trade does not endanger wildlife populations.

This new regulatory framework not only safeguards the cultural heritage of the iTaukei people but also enhances their role in conservation efforts. By adhering to these regulations, individuals can help ensure that the traditions surrounding the tabua are preserved for future generations while supporting international efforts to protect endangered species.

Overall, the initiative represents a positive step towards balancing cultural practices with environmental sustainability, fostering a sense of responsibility in trade practices that benefits both the iTaukei community and broader ecological initiatives.
