Residents of the Wailailai Melanesia community on Ovalau celebrated the opening of a new access road last Friday, marking a major enhancement in transportation for the area.
For over forty years, the community endured difficulties due to a lack of proper road access, forcing residents to transport luggage and groceries from faraway points. The completion of this access road is expected to eliminate these long-standing problems, facilitating easier and more efficient travel for the residents.
Wailailai, known for its elevated position and stunning views of Ovalau waters, is home to descendants of Melanesians from the Solomon Islands. The new road was inaugurated by Assistant Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, Sakiusa Tubuna, who announced the investment of $22,000 by the government for its construction.
Mr. Tubuna emphasized that this road symbolizes hope for the Wailailai community, highlighting their resilience and determination. He expressed pride in the community for their collective effort in completing the project, which can serve as a model for other villages and communities.
For years, the poor state of the access road had hindered public service providers from reaching the area, leaving residents to carry groceries and other items uphill—a difficult task they endured for far too long.
“Today marks a new beginning,” Mr. Tubuna stated. “This is your government, and we will continue to work tirelessly to assist all Fijians, regardless of background.”
The opening of the Wailailai access road not only enhances transportation but also embodies the spirit of community and collaboration that can inspire other regions to pursue similar improvements. This development highlights the importance of infrastructure in fostering the growth and well-being of local communities, paving the way for a brighter future in the area.
