Residents of the Wailailai Melanesia community on Ovalau celebrated the inauguration of a new access road last Friday, a significant milestone that promises to enhance transportation to their area. For over four decades, residents have struggled with the inconvenience of hauling luggage and shopping from a distant unloading point, as inadequate infrastructure made it impossible for vehicles to reach their homes.
The newly constructed road is poised to eliminate this long-standing challenge, enabling more efficient and accessible travel for the community. With its strategic elevation providing stunning views of the Ovalau waters, Wailailai is home to descendants of the Melanesians from the Solomon Islands.
Assistant Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, Sakiusa Tubuna, officiated the opening ceremony of this $22,000 project funded by the Office of the Prime Minister. He expressed optimism that the concrete access road will significantly ease the hardships faced by residents over the years. Mr. Tubuna highlighted the road as a powerful symbol of resilience and unity for the Wailailai Melanesia community.
During the event, he commended the community’s effort and encouraged other villages to emulate their collaborative spirit. Mr. Tubuna noted that the former condition of the road had hindered public service access, forcing residents to carry their groceries and goods uphill for years. “You have been crying for far too long, enduring suffering in silence, but today marks the end of that,” he stated, reaffirming the government’s commitment to support all Fijians.
This development is a cause for celebration and offers hope for a brighter future for the Wailailai community and potentially sets a precedent for similar improvements in other regions.
Overall, the new access road not only transforms transportation for residents but also symbolizes the government’s dedication to enhancing the quality of life for all citizens, reflecting a hopeful step towards progress and community development.
