A new hub dedicated to women cancer survivors, named the Self Care Retreat (Fiji) Hub, was inaugurated yesterday in Nabua, marking a significant step forward in providing much-needed support for these individuals. Mereane Vavataga, the CEO of Self Care Retreat Fiji, emphasized the hub’s vital role.
“It’s an oasis where women cancer survivors can find respite when illness becomes overwhelming,” Ms. Vavataga explained. “They can come here to recharge and share their experiences and the challenges they face.”
Founded in 2021, the non-governmental organization focuses on the spiritual, emotional, and mental healing of women cancer survivors. Twice a year, the organization hosts a different group of survivors for a hotel retreat aimed at building relationships and trust. This is followed by a three-week Bible study program focusing on spiritual and emotional healing.
Senior Pastor Manasa Kolivuso from Faith Harvest Church, who officiated the opening, lauded the initiative, stating, “Thank you so much for establishing this hub where individuals can discover a safe haven, a refuge, and connect with those who care.”
Cancer survivor Bulamarau Tikoduadua shared her inspiring story at the event, recounting how she was completely paralyzed just a year ago due to her aggressive cancer journey. She underscored the importance of support systems like the Self Care Retreat Hub, expressing gratitude for the organization’s efforts, especially during the lonely aftercare phase post-treatment.
Ms. Vavataga spoke about the organization’s aspirations for the future, including plans to open a hospice. However, she noted that this hub is just the beginning. The Self Care Retreat Fiji relies on donations and partnerships for its operations, with Ms. Vavataga sharing that she even shaved her head to help raise funds through the ‘Shave it or Save it’ campaign earlier this month.
