The Self Care Retreat (Fiji) Hub, dedicated to supporting women cancer survivors, officially opened its doors in Nabua yesterday, marking an important achievement in the provision of care for those affected by cancer.

Mereane Vavataga, CEO of Self Care Retreat Fiji, emphasized the significance of the new facility. “It’s an oasis where women cancer survivors can come when sickness overwhelms them,” she stated, adding that the hub provides a place for rest and nourishment, allowing individuals to share their experiences and challenges in a safe environment.

Founded in 2021, the non-governmental organization aims to facilitate the spiritual, emotional, and mental healing of women who have survived cancer. “Twice a year, we invite different groups of survivors to a hotel to foster a relationship and build trust. Upon returning, we offer a three-week Bible study program focused on spiritual, emotional, and inner healing, as well as the transformation of humanity,” Vavataga explained.

During the opening ceremony, Senior Pastor Manasa Kolivuso of Faith Harvest Church in Nausori commended the initiative. “Thank you for establishing this hub where individuals can find a safe haven, a refuge to connect with others who share similar concerns,” he remarked.

Cancer survivor Bulamarau Tikoduadua shared her journey at the event, recalling, “A year ago today, I was completely paralyzed. My cancer journey was short but aggressive.” She underscored the vital need for support systems like the Self Care Retreat Hub, stating that the aftermath of cancer treatment can feel isolating. “I’m really grateful for this organization because after cancer aftercare can be quite lonely,” she said.

Vavataga discussed the organization’s aspirations to open a hospice in the future, noting that this hub is only the beginning. She highlighted the ongoing reliance on donations and partnerships to sustain their operations. “For this building, I even shaved my hair to raise funds,” she revealed, referencing her involvement in the recent ‘Shave it or Save it’ campaign.
