New Regulations on Tabua Trade Spark Concerns in Fiji

Spread the love

Starting January, the iTaukei Affairs Ministry, in partnership with the Environment Ministry in Fiji, has implemented a new requirement for the import and export of the ‘tabua’, or whale’s tooth, which holds significant cultural importance for the iTaukei people. This decision is part of a broader initiative to enhance regulatory enforcement around the trade of this valuable item.

Notably, the United States has a strict prohibition against the import and export of tabua, underscoring the importance of compliance with international trade laws. Although there is currently no set quota for tabua imports, the monthly export limit is capped at 16 tabuas. Individuals wishing to take a tabua abroad must follow all relevant environmental laws, including obtaining the necessary permits from both Fiji’s Ministry of Environment and their respective home countries.

Permit applications and approval letters will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Therefore, it is advisable for individuals planning to export a tabua to arrange their requests well in advance to avoid delays, particularly as last-minute requests may exceed the established quota.

Fijian authorities are calling on all community members to adhere to the “Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora” (CITES Act) and local customs regulations. This commitment to conservation reflects a growing awareness and respect for environmental sustainability.

Summary: The iTaukei Affairs and Environment Ministries in Fiji are now requiring approvals for the import and export of ‘tabua’, an item significant to the iTaukei culture, while emphasizing adherence to conservation laws to protect endangered species.

Overall, this initiative not only enhances the cultural protection surrounding the tabua but also it exemplifies Fiji’s commitment to responsible trade and environmental stewardship.
