New Regulations on Tabua Imports: What You Need to Know!

The iTaukei Affairs Ministry, in conjunction with the Ministry of Environment, has announced a new requirement for approval regarding the import and export of ‘tabua’ or whale’s teeth, which hold significant cultural importance to the iTaukei people of Fiji. As of January, these ministries will enforce stricter regulations to ensure proper oversight over tabua transactions.

It is crucial to highlight that the import and export of tabua to the United States is strictly prohibited. While there are no specific quotas on tabua imports, the Ministry will maintain a close watch on the monthly export limit of 16 tabuas. Individuals intending to take a tabua abroad must comply with local laws, including obtaining import permissions from Fiji’s Ministry of Environment and necessary permits from their destination country.

The issuance of approval letters and permits will be conducted on a first-come, first-served basis, encouraging individuals to plan their requests in advance to avoid conflicts with the monthly quota. All parties are urged to adhere to conservation guidelines, specifically the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES Act) and relevant Customs Regulation frameworks.

This initiative reflects a significant commitment to preserving cultural heritage while ensuring sustainable trade practices. With improved regulatory measures in place, the dual objectives of celebrating tradition and protecting environmental integrity can be balanced, fostering a deeper connection between local customs and global conservation efforts.

The government’s proactive stance signals a positive step forward in recognizing the importance of both cultural symbols and ecological responsibility.
