Former SODELPA General Secretary Lenatasi Duru has teamed up with members of the G16 Opposition to investigate the possibility of creating a new political party. Duru, who left SODELPA in December 2022 after the party allied with The People’s Alliance and the National Federation Party (NFP) to form a government, expressed concerns regarding recent actions within the Coalition government.
He highlighted issues such as the involvement of former FijiFirst parliamentarians in ministerial positions, which he believes poses challenges for the Coalition’s stability. Duru pointed out that the Prime Minister’s need for security amid ongoing uncertainties is shaping the government’s strategies. He remarked, “We are trying to offer something different. Politics is a game where you play your cards and play them right.”
Addressing the concerns of the iTaukei community about unmet expectations during the FijiFirst era, Duru indicated that the vision for the new party would explicitly include addressing these issues through its manifesto and constitution. He noted the need for a focused approach to effectively utilize the resources and financial benefits accrued from previous administrations, stating, “Since coming back from working on this initiative, we are focused on ensuring that the interests of the people are put at the forefront.”
This move toward establishing a new political entity is paralleled by similar initiatives among former FijiFirst members under the leadership of Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu. His announcement to form a new party reflects the evolving political landscape in Fiji. The initiative is gaining traction as it seeks to restore democratic values, improve governance, and provide representation for those discontent with the current political framework. It presents an opportunity for increased political engagement and awareness among the electorate, encouraging a re-evaluation of choices leading into upcoming elections, with hopes for a more unified and representative democratic process.
