The National Fire Authority (NFA) has officially inaugurated its Paramedics Ambulance Department and recognized new paramedics at its headquarters in Suva. CEO Puamau Sowane highlighted that the previous management of the ambulance services by operational officers lacked effective oversight, resulting in inefficient use of government funds.
With the establishment of this new department, the NFA aims to enhance training for professionals to improve their capacity in addressing medical emergencies. Sowane shared that the new department is now led by a dedicated manager paramedic, and efforts are underway to build a specialized center for paramedics within the existing fire station facilities. Although the organization does not yet have fully specialized paramedics, some firefighters have trained with the Ministry of Health.
The Emergency Ambulance and Paramedic Health Services Department is designed to ensure victims and firefighters receive appropriate care after incidents. Sowane emphasized that paramedics will be present at fire scenes to assist both victims and firefighters.
Currently, the NFA operates nine ambulances and plans to introduce six additional paramedic ambulances to enhance service delivery. Despite the high cost, these ambulances have been specifically designed not only for patient transport but also for pre-hospital care.
In his concluding statements, Sowane urged the public to act cautiously during the festive season to prevent fire-related incidents.
This development marks a significant step forward in improving emergency medical services, reflecting the NFA’s commitment to both community safety and the professional development of their staff. The establishment of the Paramedics Ambulance Department is a hopeful initiative, promising better preparedness and response in emergencies, ultimately benefiting the community as a whole.
