New Office Boosts Fiji’s Tourism Development in Vanua Levu

The Fiji Tourism Development Programme in Vanua Levu, known as NaVualiku, officially opened its office in Savusavu Town last Saturday. The new office, located at the JKS Building, was inaugurated by the Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, representing the ministry overseeing the programme.

Minister Gavoka stated that this office signifies more than just a physical location; it embodies the initiative’s commitment to making a meaningful impact by developing strategies, mobilizing resources, and establishing a foundation for sustainable growth. He emphasized that the ministry aims to not only increase tourist numbers in Vanua Levu but also to enhance the lives of local residents.

“The office will be pivotal in ensuring that the benefits of the NaVualiku programme extend to every community on this island,” he added.

The project is backed by a US$200 million funding initiative from the World Bank, as explained by Stefano Mocci, the World Bank Group country manager for Fiji. This funding will be executed through a multi-phase approach over the next ten years.

Mocci highlighted the World Bank’s commitment, along with partners and stakeholders, to assist the Fijian government in transforming Vanua Levu into a vibrant tourism destination that generates employment—particularly for women and youth—attracts local and international investment, and stimulates economic growth, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for the people of Vanua Levu.

In addition to financial support, the World Bank will leverage its global and regional expertise to aid the project’s implementation. The new office is seen as a critical element in facilitating on-the-ground results, improving coordination and collaboration, and fostering stronger partnerships in the northern region.

Mocci also expressed pride in supporting Fiji’s development goals under the ‘Look North’ policy, which aims to strengthen the tourism sector in Vanua Levu.
