New Nakasi Market Unveiled: A Boost for Local Vendors and Community

The Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, officially inaugurated the new Nakasi market yesterday, which has been developed at a cost of $1.98 million and will host 100 vendors.

Nalumisa emphasized that the Nakasi Market symbolizes the Coalition Government’s dedication to the National Development Plan aimed at empowering the people of Fiji through unity. He noted that many vendors had been operating in difficult conditions along the Nasinu and Nausori corridors and expressed that the new market provides them with a clean and secure environment that enhances their livelihoods and offers a dignified space to expand their businesses.

He described the market as an embodiment of opportunity and empowerment for the vendors, stating, “This is not just commerce; it is about empowering individuals and communities.” He further clarified that the investment is not only financial but also an investment in human potential and the future of Nakasi, Nausori, and Fiji as a whole.

The new market includes restroom facilities for vendors and parking for customers, which Nalumisa considers essential for a growing urban area like Nakasi. He pointed out that this achievement is a result of collaboration between the Nausori Town Council, the Government, and the Fiji Corrections Service, which contributed the land for the project.

Nalumisa reiterated the government’s commitment to establish necessary laws and regulations for municipal markets throughout Fiji. He remarked, “We are enhancing transparency, accountability, and efficiency in the management of all municipal markets with the new market regulations,” aiming to foster an environment where businesses can flourish and vendors can operate with dignity and security. The Nakasi Market is vital for ensuring food security, generating local government revenue, and promoting community vitality.
